| Swiss law outlines goldfish rights A new Swiss law spells out in exhaustive detail how all animals domestic and wild are to be treated, whether they be pets, farm animals, zoo animals or destined for scientific experiments. According to the new law, flushing a goldfish down the toilet alive is no longer permitted. Now a fish must be first knocked out and then killed before its body can be disposed of. Catch-and-release fishing is now illegal; if you catch it, you kill it. Hamsters, llamas, alpacas and yaks can no longer be kept by themselves. Goats and sheep must have "a visual contact with their fellows." The list goes on and on. This is obviously a well intentioned law, but it illustrates the difficulty in legislating morality and it has all but killed goldfish-eating contests. Swiss law outlines goldfish rights

| Mozilla's thoughts on google's chrome tandiond writes to tell us that in a recent blog posting, Mozilla CEO John Lily shared his thoughts on Google's new browser project, Chrome, and what that means for Mozilla. "It should come as no real surprise that Google has done something here — their business is the web, and they've got clear opinions on how things should be, and smart people thinking about how to make things better. Chrome will be a browser optimized for the things that they see as important, and it'll be interesting to see how it evolves." Mozilla's Europe president, Tristan Nitot also chimed in during an interview with PCPro, stating that they don't view this as a direct attack on Firefox, even if it did catch them by surprise. "I'll take another example: just before Microsoft launched Vista, it invited us [to work with it] so that Firefox works better on Windows Vista. Because for it, Firefox being a top-tier application that was very successful - we now have 200 million users around the world - it could not afford to have Firefox run slowly on Vista. Therefore, it helped us improve Firefox for Vista. That's just the same for Google. It wants Firefox to perform well with its applications, that's for sure. Indeed, it even wants IE to perform well with Gmail and the rest. It's just that it has very limited control over this. That's why Google's been frustrated and it is launching this Chrome browser." | Intel acquires mobile linux developer openedhand nerdyH writes with the news that Intel has acquired OpenedHand, the developer of 'Poky Linux' and Matchbox. "The UK-based embedded Linux services team will join the Intel Open Source Technology Center, and will focus on Moblin development for mobile Internet devices and other mobile devices." The article notes that Intel's Moblin initiative had "failed to generate much interest" among developers when first announced earlier this year; this acquisition might help it catch the attention of more Linux developers. | Us no longer the world's internet hub museumpeace brings us a New York Times story about how internet traffic is increasingly flowing around the US as web-based industries catch up in other parts of the world. Other issues, such as the Patriot Act, have made foreign companies wary about having their data on US servers. From the NYTimes: "Internet industry executives and government officials have acknowledged that Internet traffic passing through the switching equipment of companies based in the United States has proved a distinct advantage for American intelligence agencies. In December 2005, The New York Times reported that the National Security Agency had established a program with the cooperation of American telecommunications firms that included the interception of foreign Internet communications. Some Internet technologists and privacy advocates say those actions and other government policies may be hastening the shift in Canadian and European traffic away from the United States." | The 1-petabyte barrier is crumbling CurtMonash writes "I had been a database industry analyst for a decade before I found 1-gigabyte databases to write about. Now it is 15 years later, and the 1-petabyte barrier is crumbling. Specifically, we are about to see data warehouses — running on commercial database management systems — that contain over 1 petabyte of actual user data. For example, Greenplum is slated to have two of them within 60 days. Given how close it was a year ago, Teradata may have crossed the 1-petabyte mark by now too. And by the way, Yahoo already has a petabyte+ database running on a home-grown system. Meanwhile, the 100-terabyte mark is almost old hat. Besides the vendors already mentioned above, others with 100+ terabyte databases deployed include Netezza, DATAllegro, Dataupia, and even SAS." The 1-petabyte barrier is crumbling

| Nvidia claims intel's larrabee is "a gpu from 2006" Barence sends this excerpt from PC Pro: "Nvidia has delivered a scathing criticism of Intel's Larrabee, dismissing the multi-core CPU/GPU as wishful thinking — while admitting it needs to catch up with AMD's current Radeon graphics cards. 'Intel is not a stupid company,' conceded John Mottram, chief architect for the company's GT200 core. 'They've put a lot of people behind this, so clearly they believe it's viable. But the products on our roadmap are competitive to this thing as they've painted it. And the reality is going to fall short of the optimistic way they've painted it. As [blogger and CPU architect] Peter Glaskowsky said, the "large" Larrabee in 2010 will have roughly the same performance as a 2006 GPU from Nvidia or ATI.' Speaking ahead of the opening of the annual NVISION expo on Monday, he also admitted Nvidia 'underestimated ATI with respect to their product.'" Nvidia claims intel's larrabee is "a gpu from 2006"

| Providing a whitelisted wireless hotspot? Ploxis writes "I volunteer some of my day managing a small network (and a ragtag band of computers) for a local nonprofit. I have been asked to set up a second, open, independent wireless network on site that will provide cost-free broadband Internet access to patrons. The catch is that they want to provide access only to a select group of about 25 websites while disallowing everything else. No objectionable sites, no mundane but non-relevant sites such as online banking or YouTube, and no other activities such as P2P or IM. They only want HTTP and HTTPS activity from a set of whitelisted websites." For the rest of Ploxis's question and his intial thoughts on making this happen, read on below. | Bees help detectives catch serial killers Hugh Pickens writes "The way bumblebees search for food could help detectives hunt down serial killers — because just as bees forage some distance away from their hives, so murderers avoid killing near their homes, says a University of London research team. The researchers' analysis describes how bees create a 'buffer zone' around their hive where they will not forage, to reduce the risk of predators and parasites locating the nest. This behavior pattern is similar to the geographic profile of criminals stalking their victims. 'Most murders happen close to the killer's home, but not in the area directly surrounding a criminal's house, where crimes are less likely to be committed because of the fear of getting caught by someone they know,' says Dr. Nigel Raine. Criminologists will fold this insight into their models using details about crime scenes, robbery locations, abandoned cars, even dead bodies, to hone the search for a suspect." Bees help detectives catch serial killers
